AMERICAN LEGION: Wilder Sr. splits four games in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON — Wilder Senior split four games at a Mount Vernon American Legion tournament, getting a go-ahead run in the seventh inning on an error to beat Whatcom Post AAA 3-2 on Sunday.

Three out of the four games in Mount Vernon were one-run affairs, with two of them decided in the final inning.

Wilder Seniors lost on a walk-off 5-4 to FCA Premier on Saturday, beat Diamond Sports Premier 4-3 and lost to Washington Awards 9-4.

In Sunday’s win, the game was locked in a 2-2 tie when the seniors got a pair of singles from Bryant Laboy and Kody Williams, who finished the game 3-for-3. Whatcom made an error on a Colton Romero grounder to give Wilder the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, pitcher Landen Olson gave up a double, but then he picked the baserunner off at second. He struck out two other batters to earn the victory.

Luke Flodstrom hit a double, while Ezra Townsend had a double and an RBI. Romero had a double and a stolen base. The trio of Zeke Schmadeke, Braydan White and Olson allowed just five hits.

Wilder Senior (10-4) next plays the WBS Colts Red at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Volunteer Field as part of the Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker Tournament.

Saturday’s Game

Wilder Senior lost 5-4 to FCA Premier on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The game was played with a runner automatically put on second base in extra innings. FCA Premier was able to load the bases and the seniors got one out when pitcher Alex Angevine fielded a ground ball and threw home to get the lead runner. The next batter singled, however, ending the game.

Angevine finished the game 2-for-5. Flodstrom had a hit, two RBIs and two walks, while Schmadeke had a hit and an RBI. Lincoln Bear had a hit and run scored.

Romero pitched four innings and allowed four hits and four earned runs. Brayden Martin pitched 3⅓ innings, allowing three hits and no runs. He struck out one. Angevine took the loss with the eight-inning single.

Friday’s Games

Wilder Senior split a pair of games Friday at a Mount Vernon tournament, winning it first game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and dropping the second when they gave up five runs in the sixth.

The seniors first beat Diamond Sports Premier 4-3 as Kody Williams and Alex Angevine combined to give up just four hits. Williams started, going six innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs. He struck out four. Angevine pitched the seventh, striking out the side to earn the save.

Wilder won when Rylan Politika and Lincoln Bear opened the sixth with a couple of singles. Flodstrom drove in the tying run on a sacrifice bunt and Olson grounded out as another run came in to score on an error.

Angevine finished the game with two RBIs, while Lincoln Bear had a hit and scored two run. Townsend had a hit and a run scored while Flodstrom had an RBI and a walk.

In the second game, Wilder Senior was keeping it close with Washington Awards 18U, down just 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. WA18U scored five runs in the sixth to blow the game open, going on to win 9-4.

Angevine had a double and two RBIs, while Olson also had a double and a run scored. Josiah Gooding and Schmadeke each had a hit and a run scored.

Ethan Staples started on the mound, going 4⅔ innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. He struck out six. Brayden Martin pitched two-thirds of an inning and struck out two.
