PORT ANGELES –– Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell likely won’t be there, but The Senate will convene a special North Olympic Peninsula session.
The rip-roaring acoustic Seattle trio will rule over the Department of Rock and Roll at 7 p.m. Saturday at Olympic Cellars Winery at 255410 U.S. Highway 101.
Proceeds from this week’s concert benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of the North Olympic Peninsula.

Fourth Friday
SEQUIM –– You and I are the featured writers, but we’ve got to get this done quick.
Writers on the Spit are going open mic for this month’s Fourth Friday Reading at the Rainshadow Coffee Bar, 157 W. Cedar St., at 6 p.m. today.
The rules are simple. Make a poem or short story that can be read in less than five minutes.
The group has thrown out three prompts for those looking for jumping-off points: “Next to nothing,” “the biggest surprise” and “time out!”
Writers may also freestyle if the prompts don’t provide inspiration, organizer Ruth Marcus said.
Admission is free.
Plein Air contest
PORT ANGELES –– Grab your brushes and go outside because the clock is ticking on the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center’s Plein Air contest.
The center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd., is asking those inspired by the wild backyard of the North Olympic Peninsula to paint a scene of the lush landscape and enter that work by Aug. 17 in its community contest.
All successfully submitted work will be entered into the Paint Out Exhibition at the The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave. from Aug. 22 to Sept. 14.
More than $700 in cash prizes will be given in 10 categories at a special awards reception Sept. 14.
Entry fee is $5.

Jance to read
PORT ANGELES –– Best-selling author J.A. Jance will read from Remains of Innocence, the latest addition to her popular Joanna Brady series tonight.
Brought to town with the help of Port Book and News, Jance’s reading begins at 7 p.m. in the Raymond Carver Room in the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.
Released Tuesday, Remains is the 16th book in the Brady series and follows the detective as she solves two perplexing cases that may be tied together.
Jance has appeared on the New York Times’ best-seller list and is the author of 41 novels and a book of poetry.
