CHIMACUM — The Chimacum School District is accepting applications for a seat on the School Board that will be vacated June 20 by Maggie Ejde.

Ejde, who has served on the board since 2014, announced she would resign in a letter dated May 20. Her resignation was accepted by the rest of the board May 24, according to the Chimacum Schools website at www.csd49.org.

Ejde said she was resigning for “various personal reasons” and declined further comment.

Applications are due by noon June 24 at the Chimacum School District office at 91 West Valley Road.

Information about applying to be appointed to the District 3 post is at http://tinyurl.com/PDN-apply.

The person who is named to fill the seat will serve until 2019, said Superintendent Rick Thompson.

Ejde “was very effective, and we thank her for her service,” Thompson said.

Board Chairwoman Cammy Brown also praised Ejde’s actions as a board member.

“She was a thoughtful, articulate board member,” Brown said. “Her enthusiasm had a positive effect on the district.”

Brown commended Ejde for her high visibility in the schools, which she visited frequently.

“She was a stay-at-home mom, so she was able to tell us what was really going on in the district,” Brown said.

“The other board members who all have full-time jobs were not able to do that.”

Ejde was appointed in 2014 to fill an unexpired term and was elected in November 2015 to a four-year term.

She had a high visibility during the campaign for the district’s proposed $29.1 million construction measure, which was narrowly defeated in April, the third attempt to pass a bond.

Once applications are in hand, the board will screen the nominees and determine which candidates to interview.

A quorum of board members — at least three — will be required to select a replacement.

As a board member, Ejde is the supervisor of student directors, participates in the Chimacum School Coalition and is active in the Key Communicators group.

She is the district’s legislative representative, a role in which Thompson said she was particularly helpful.

She is a 1993 graduate of Port Townsend High School and left the area for several years before returning in 2007.

Her daughter, Olivia Ejde, is the student representative on the School Board and was a 2016 recipient of the Jefferson County Heart of Service Award.
