The dedication of a sculpture, the last ice-cream social of the season and a hoedown in Forks are among the activities offered on the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

Sculpture dedication

PORT ANGELES — A new sculpture, “Spirit,” will be dedicated at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center at 11:30 a.m. today.

The public is invited to the ceremony at the entrance to Webster’s Woods, adjacent to the fine arts center’s parking lot at 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Storyteller and Story People of Clallam County co-founder Josephine Pedersen, who donated the stone-and-bronze work by California artist James T. Hubbell, will be present.

She commissioned the work in honor of her husband, the late oceanographer Melvin Pedersen. It will be dedicated to him.

Free concert

PORT ANGELES — The players in Deborah Morgan-Ellis’ Summer Workshop for young string musicians will give a free concert at 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Seventh St.

The musicians plan another free concert Aug. 28 at the church.

The students, who range from age 5 to 14, are divided by ability into ensembles during the Aug. 17-28 Summer Workshop.

The program’s teachers include veteran conductor Phil Morgan-Ellis and a team of high school- and college-age musicians who are alumni of the workshop.

Back to School

PORT ANGELES — School supplies, haircuts, community service resources and additional back-to-school information will be offered for free during the Port Angeles School District Back to School giveaway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Back to School event for families in need will be at Jefferson Elementary, 218 E. 12th St.

Many supplies and opportunities will be available free to students in kindergarten through grade 12.

Families do not need to sign up in advance. A volunteer navigator will assist each family on arrival.

The giveaway is hosted by the school district in concert with Parent Line/Lutheran Community Services NW and other local service organizations.

Winery concert

PORT ANGELES — Vaudeville Etiquette, a rootsy-rock band from Seattle, will arrive at Olympic Cellars, 255410 U.S. Highway 101, for a concert Saturday.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show, for which tickets are $14 in advance via www.brownpapertickets.com.

Admission will be $17 at the door, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Peninsula Trails Coalition.

The coalition also will raise money at the concert by raffling off a ride in Summer Martell’s restored vintage biplane.

Discussion group

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon today.

International coach Rodrigo Rodrigues, the association’s chief coach, will oversee the event for those 12 and older.

Honeybee talk

SEQUIM — Cindy Ericksen, president of the North Olympic Peninsula Beekeepers’ Association, will lead a presentation about honeybees at the Master Gardeners’ Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Ericksen has been a Master Gardener for more than nine years.

She maintains the bee hive at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, which is relied upon to pollinate the various vegetable crops and orchard within the garden.

During Ericksen’s presentation, she will discuss threats to pollinators and the importance of protecting and restoring pollinator habitat to encourage bee activity.

She also will give the audience steps to consider while creating a landscape to support pollinators.

Last ice-cream social

SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, will have this season’s last ice-cream social from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The cost is $5 for a banana split or a sundae.

Proceeds are used by the grange for its many projects and activities.

FORKS

Annual hoedown

FORKS — The Forks Elks Lodge will host its second annual Hoedown and Family Festival at the lodge, 941 Merchants Road, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The free event, which is open to the public, will offer hay rides, gem panning, horse roping, archery, horseshoes and prizes.

The Masonic Lodge will conduct the Child ID program, and local police, sheriff, fire department, Coast Guard and ambulance personnel will be on site to discuss emergency response.

Each of the first 100 children will get a free cinch backpack, cowboy hat and bandana.

Dance lessons

FORKS — Blakelee’s will offer country and western dance lessons at 8 p.m. Saturday.

No cover will be charged at the business at 1222 S. Forks Ave. Tips to the dance instructors and disc jockeys will be welcomed.

A new dance lesson will be present each hour.

Class reunion

FORKS — The Forks High School Class of 1985 will have a reunion at the Roundhouse, 110 LaPush Road, on Saturday.

Alumni from classes 1982 to 1988 are invited to join the Class of 1985 at 9 p.m. Cost is $20.

Poetry in the Round

PORT TOWNSEND — Poetry in the Round, an informal reading and discussion of poetry, is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today.

The reading is sponsored by the Northwind Arts Center every third Friday of the month.

The gathering is at Huber’s Inn, 1421 Landes St.

Renku is a poetry form of linked verse that originated in Japan.

Gatherings, which are the third Friday of each month, include a light potluck, so participants are invited to bring raisins, dips, fruits, chips, crackers, cheese, cookies or other snacks.

Food bank fundraiser

PORT TOWNSEND — The fourth annual Fundraiser and Yard Sale sponsored by the Jefferson County Food Bank and the Jefferson County Pet Food Pantry will be at Sound Storage, 606 E. Park Ave., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

More than 20 sellers will be on site. A silent auction is planned. Food donations for humans and animals will be accepted.

All cash donations will go to the pet food bank.

Clothing swap set

CHIMACUM — The seventh annual kids back-to-school clothing swap will take place at Chimacum Elementary School, 91 West Valley Road, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Parents can clean out closets and swap for a new wardrobe.

Sizes must be between 5 and 16, and shoes and backpacks also can be swapped.

Buy items for $1 if there are none to swap.

Clothing can be donated from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. Those who donate get vouchers for clothing.
