TIMBER! A tower at Glines Canyon Dam crashes to the ground as part of Elwha River restoration (VIDEO)

A HUGE WATER intake tower at Glines Canyon Dam and its Lake Mills reservoir crashes to the ground in a video (and still photos) courtesy of cinematographer John Gussman of Sequim, 360-808-6406 or email jgussman@dcproductions.com.

The tower was taken down on Wednesday (Aug. 22).

Gussman is working on a documentary film about the $325 million Elwha River restoration/dam removal project.

You can learn more about Gussman’s work on the Elwha at www.elwhafilm.com .

The demolition work at Glines Canyon Dam — in addition to blasting, workers are using a huge hydraulic jackhammer on a barge — and at the Elwha Dam, the other dam on the river, began last September. Both Elwha Dam, built in 1913, and Glines Canyon, completed in 1927, were constructed without fish ladders.

Elwha Dam, 5 miles from the mouth of the river, was removed earlier this year, and Lake Aldwell behind it has drained.

Lake Mills behind Glines is now being drained, as Gussman’s photos show. The entire removal project is ahead of schedule by almost a year.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
