PORT ANGELES — Clallam-Jefferson Pro Bono Lawyers hosted an observance of Law Day at the Elwha Heritage Center in Port Angeles.
The organization provides free legal services regarding civil matters and disputes to low-income Peninsula residents.
The gathering included a keynote address by state Supreme Court Justice Sal Mungia regarding the critical importance of the rule of law.
Mungia is the newest member of the state Supreme Court, elected to replace Justice Susan Owens, who retired in December and died in March.
Sunitha Anjilve, president of the Washington State Bar Association, presented a Local Hero Award to James Rodriguez for his outstanding leadership and pro bono service.
Ruth Mollinet, president of the Clallam County Bar Association, and Ariel Speser, president of the Jefferson County Bar Association, presented Lawyer of the Year Awards to Lillian Powers of Jefferson County and retired Judge Frank Cuthbertson of Clallam County in recognition of their many hours of quality volunteer legal service to low-income residents.
