Skateboarder, 13, dies of injuries from fall at Port Angeles Skate Park

PORT ANGELES — A 13-year-old skateboarder died Saturday at a Seattle hospital from injuries he received at the Port Angeles Skate Park the night before, a nursing supervisor at Harborview Medical Center said.

Paramedics were called to the park at 6:32 p.m. Friday after Frank Russo, a Stevens Middle School student, hit his head while skateboarding, went into seizures and fell unconscious, according to 9-1-1 dispatch logs.

Erik Sundin, a firefighter and paramedic with the Port Angeles Fire Department, said the department responded to the park to treat a minor who was transported to Olympic Medical Center.

However, Sundin said he could not say any more because of federal medical privacy laws.

City officials did not issue any formal statement on Russo’s death.

They also did not know if the boy was wearing a helmet or what part of the large concrete complex he was skating.

The skate park, open less than a year, hosted the 2006 Concrete Rodeo skateboarding event on Saturday, and helmets were required to participate, according to the competition’s Web site.

However, not every skateboarder at the park Saturday was helmeted.
