PORT ANGELES — A fundraising campaign has begun to build a skateboarding park in Port Angeles this summer.
The price tag is $300,000.
“We need to raise $100,000 by June 1 — and the balance soon after,”‘ said Steve Zenovic, president of the Port Angeles Nor’wester Rotary Club, which is leading the effort.
The club is looking for contributions of materials and services from local merchants and contractors as well as cash sponsorships.
Plans call for the Port Angeles Skate Park to measure 100 feet by 110 feet and be located in the northeast corner of Erickson Playfield, Fourth and Race Streets, directly across from the Dream Playground.
The goal is to break ground in the first week of June, with a projected opening date of Labor Day weekend.
Nor’wester Rotary members have been working with the city and neighborhood residents on the project — which will accommodate inline skaters as well as skateboarders (but not BMX bikers as originally planned) — for more than a year.
The club has already raised cash and service contributions of $50,400.
