Sequim man faces seven child sex, molestation charges

PORT ANGELES — A Sequim man is facing seven child sex and molestation charges after an investigation by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office prompted by a report from a family member of the alleged victim.

Kyle L. Gordeuk, 26, will be arraigned at 9 a.m. Feb. 9 in Clallam County Superior Court following his arrest at the garage apartment he was renting outside Sequim. He remained in the Clallam County jail on Thursday with bail set at $250,000, after it was reduced from the prosecutor’s recommendation of $500,000.

Gordeuk was charged Wednesday with seven Class A felonies, each punishable by up to life imprisonment and/or a $50,000 fine plus restitution and assessments. The charges include first-degree child molestation; second-degree rape (incapable of consent: physically helpless/mentally incapacitated); first-degree rape (kidnapping) and four counts of second-degree rape of a child with a special allegation of an ongoing pattern of sexual abuse.

The first-degree and second-degree rape charges include a special allegation that the victim is younger than 15, which would make the maximum penalty either the standard sentencing range or 25 years, whichever is greater.

The alleged victim’s mother called the sheriff’s office on Sunday to report Gordeuk had raped her 12-year-old daughter in their Sequim-area home, according to the probable cause statement filed Wednesday in Clallam County Superior Court.

The girl told sheriff’s Detective Stacy Sampson during a three-hour videotaped interview on Tuesday that multiple assaults occurred between June 2023 and last month. The girl turned 12 in November.

Sampson obtained a court order allowing the girl’s mother to record a telephone conversation with Gordeuk, according to the probable cause statement.

During the taped conversation on Tuesday, Gordeuk was crying and upset and apologized for what he did and said he didn’t want to hurt her, the probable cause statement stated.

When asked if the girl should get a pregnancy test or morning-after pill, Gordeuk said, “it would be best,” according to the probable cause statement.

Search warrants were obtained and Gordeuk was taken into custody but invoked his right to remain silent, the probable cause statement said.

A search of Gordeuk’s garage apartment produced a cellphone, two boxes of condoms and a roll of blue duct tape that allegedly was used in at least one of the assaults.

Joshua Wright, program director for the Legacy Forest Defense Coalition, stands in a forest plot named "Dungeness and Dragons," which is managed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Currently, the DNR is evaluating Wright's claim that there is a rare plant community in one of the units, which would qualify the parcel for automatic protection from logging. Locating rare plant communities is just one of the methods environmental activists use to protect what they call "legacy forests." (Joshua Wright)
