SEQUIM — A task force commissioned by the City Council is looking at privatizing solid waste services.
Members of the task force say garbage collection, recycling and yard waste collection services in Sequim should be contracted to a private company.
They said the move will save money for city residents and help the city avoid potential high costs associated with the anticipated closure of the Port Angeles landfill in 2006.
“When the city starting providing this service, there was no other alternative,” said City Councilman Walt Schubert, a member of the task force. “If we find someone to do it more effectively, then we shouldn’t be in the business.”
Recommendations will likely be presented by the three-member task force, which includes two council members and City Manager Bill Elliott, to the full City Council by the end of the year, Schubert said.
