LOST MOUNTAIN – Ralph Turner has about 80 green acres near Sequim that he’s not about to develop into human housing.
He is, however, planning to provide dwelling units for 100 new residents – plus more later.
They’re rabbits from Seattle, pets that people dumped in city parks.
Over the past several years they have, not surprisingly, multiplied and become a major problem for the Emerald City.
A group of volunteers, the Friends of Park Rabbits, rounded up as many as they could and kept them in a church in Seattle’s Magnolia district.
This summer, the Friends found Turner and the Precious Life Animal Sanctuary, an idyllic spot off Lost Mountain Road, southwest of Sequim, and the rabbits – all spayed or neutered – have made a new home there.
Ralph and his wife, Caryl, are well-known to animal-rights activists across the West. They invested much of their retirement fund in the refuge they opened a year ago.
