Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center holds open house Saturday

SEQUIM — Latin beats, serene moving meditation and a lot of splashing will converge at Sequim’s 22-year-old fitness hub Saturday.

The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center has long been known for its swimming pool, a six-lane, 25-yard indoor pool heated to 84 degrees.

Then there’s the 17-foot-tall water slide, the hot tub and the 88-degree shallow pool for young children and seniors.

In recent years, SARC has introduced many land exercise classes spiced with international flavors, as well as herds of training machines for those who want to sculpt themselves to near-perfection.

This Saturday, SARC, at 610 N. Fifth Ave., will show off everything during its annual open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Admission is free, and the event includes quick and easy demonstrations of four fitness regimens.

• Personal trainer Brandon Stoppani will teach visitors about endurance circuit training from 11:15 a.m. to 11:30.

• Kim King will give a yoga demonstration from 11:45 a.m. to noon.

• Teresa Schmid will lead a mini Zumba class — aerobics to Latin music, for movers of any level — from 12:15 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.

• Schmid will then shift gears and teach tai chi, a gentle Chinese form of exercise, from 12:45 to 1 p.m.

Also during the open house, SARC staffers will dish up free snacks and drinks, give tours of the center and hand out free passes for future visits.

“If you are new to the area or have visited in the past, now is a great time to see the facility and what we offer,” including the newer exercise classes and workout machines, said Erika Starks, chairwoman of SARC’s Board of Commissioners.

Visitors will have opportunities to win passes that will provide them with $150 worth of SARC visits, a month of fitness classes and other benefits, she added.

SARC’s one-year passes cost $342.27 plus tax for adults, $317.82 plus tax for seniors age 62 and up, $263.90 for youth age 8 to 17 and $167.93 for children up to age 7. Pass holders pay an additional $25 to $30 per month for group fitness classes.

If you just want to come in on any given day and use the pool, the circuit training room and the other exercise rooms, it’s $10 at the door for age 16 and older, $5 for kids age 8 to 15 and $2.25 for children 7 and younger. Non-members also pay a $4 drop-in fee for classes such as yoga or Zumba.

Schmid, who’s taught tai chi at SARC since 1999, said she loves every moment of the peaceful exercise. She also relishes the salsa, cumbia and merengue moves of Zumba, which she’s been teaching since summer 2009.
