SEQUIM — Ten staffers in the Sequim School District can breathe a sigh of relief after the School Board voted late Thursday to rescind layoff notices given to them earlier this month.
The 10 — made up mostly of classroom teachers — will be offered continuing employment with the district following passage of a two-year, $5.16 million maintenance and operations replacement levy in a special election ending May 18.
A total of 14 employees received pink slips after a February levy bid failed to attain the required 60 percent “yes” vote.
In response, board directors cut most extracurricular activities and some academic programs.
The levy retry in May passed with a 73 percent “yes” vote.
Armed with more revenues — but not quite as much as they feel they would need to fully restore every proposed cut — the board voted to approve Superintendent Garn Christensen’s recommendation that all but four pink-slipped employees be offered contracts for the 2004-2005 school year.
Another board meeting
Details of actual program offerings will be taken up this Thursday at another special board meeting.
