Mammoth Port Angeles council agenda will take two meetings

PORT ANGELES — Tuesday’s City Council meeting might seem a little like the season-ending cliffhanger for a television series.

The mammoth agenda that includes four preliminary housing subdivisions, three lengthy public hearings, a rezone request, and a request for proposal to build a garbage transfer station — in addition to regular agenda items — means Tuesday’s 6 p.m. meeting will be called around 10 p.m. with the familiar refrain: “to be continued.”

“The agenda was so long we decided to break it into two parts,” said City Manager Mike Quinn.

“The land use items will be continued until the June 8 meeting.”

The two meetings could combine to last eight hours, Quinn said.

The three public hearings and consideration of the transfer station request for proposals will be continued until a special meeting on June 8.

Both meetings will be held in the council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

Three public hearings

The three public hearings are to consider:

* The city’s 2004-2010 Transportation Improvement Program and Capital Facilities Plan.

* A total of 68 proposed amendments to the city’s comprehensive plan and land use map.

* A request from Olympic Medical Center to rezone the northwest corner of Race and Caroline streets to “commercial office” to build a parking lot.

The City Council also might begin discussion of the request for proposals for the garbage transfer station on the landfill property in west Port Angeles — and then continue that talk until the June 8 meeting.

Perhaps the biggest topic on Tuesday’s agenda is consideration of four housing subdivisions totaling 108 new lots.

The four preliminary subdivisions:

* 12 lots at Milwaukee Drive and West 10th Street.

* 43 lots along Rook Drive east of Mount Angeles Road.

* 15 lots along Eckard Avenue at Porter Street.

* 38 lots at Lindberg and Golf Course roads.

These are part of a flood of proposed residential development that includes more than 10 subdivisions adding 225 lots in the past nine months.

Nearly 150 people provided feedback about a new Hurricane Ridge Lodge project following the 2023 fire that destroyed the original structure. Nine easels were set up with questions and notes were provided for people to express their goals for a new lodge. The earliest construction can begin is in 2028, and it would take two to three years to complete, weather permitting. (Dave Logan/for Peninsula Daily News)
