Most North Olympic Peninsula public school districts have seen a drop in student enrollment as the 2007-2008 school year begins, although two – Crescent and Quillayute Valley – have made gains.
Crescent School District experienced a boost in students from 182 students last year to 199 this year, Superintendent Tom Anderson said.
“We were very pleasantly surprised that it had gone up,” he said.
“We were predicting a flat number, or maybe down a little bit.”
Anderson said that the increase was spread out over the grade levels, but that the addition of all-day kindergarten helped.
“Now that we have all-day kindergarten, we have about 21 students in the program, ” He said.
“But we have literally picked up students in every grade.”
The home school connection program has almost 100 students, which is in addition to the number attending the school.
The district, while not getting the full amount that the state pays for other students, receives some state money for home schooled students who are registered through the district.
