Sand sculptors will depict ‘Wonders of the World’

PORT ANGELES — “Wonders of the World” is the theme that sand sculptors will follow at this summer’s Arts in Action festival on Port Angeles’ waterfront.

The winning theme was submitted by Charles Carmichael of Port Angeles — and four other people.

Almost 170 entries were mailed to the Peninsula Daily News-Nor’wester Rotary Club sand sculpture theme contest from residents in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Five of those suggested “Wonders of the World.”

“The judging committee agreed that it was a great theme, and the entry with it that had the earliest postmark was declared the winner,” said Doc Reiss, Arts in Action co-chairman.

Carmichael’s entry was postmarked four days ahead of the second person who suggested “Wonders of the World.”

“I am a very lucky man,” said Carmichael.

As the winner, he will receive $100 worth of Port Angeles Downtown Dollars, which can be used as cash at participating downtown merchants.

Nine sand sculptors from the United States and Canada will participate in the North American Masters Invitational Sand Sculpture Contest during Arts in Action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 24 to 26, at City Pier and Hollywood Beach.

Spectators will be able to watch as the sculptors turn piles of sand into their representations of “Wonders of the World.”

The sculptures will be judged, and winners will receive cash awards.

Nor’wester Rotary is the organizer of Arts and Action.

This year’s sand sculpture contest at the annual festival will be presented by Windermere Real Estate and sponsored by local businesses.

The festival also features food, live music, a car show and about 50 arts and crafts vendors.
