PORT TOWNSEND — U.S. Senate candidate Mike McGavick called Tuesday on the support of Jefferson County Republicans, saying his political plan of action is to rescue the Senate from the “partisan bitterness” that fails to solve problems affecting American families.
“I plan to take common sense and stability back to Washington,” McGavick told about 40 attending a rally at the Ann Starrett Mansion bed and breakfast, owned by Bob and Edel Sokol in Uptown Port Townsend.
McGavick, who will challenge Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Mountlake Terrace, in November, rode the ferry in across wind-whipped Admiralty Inlet after a morning campaign stop in Oak Harbor.
Driving rains prevented him from stopping at the ferry terminal where about 20 flag-waving county Republicans greeted him and his staff.
The 47-year-old executive, credited with saving Safeco Insurance from financial disaster, was in Port Townsend for about two hours on a swing halfway across the North Olympic Peninsula, ending in Port Angeles.
He said he was planning today to roll his 24-city east-to-west state campaign caravan on to Shelton.
McGavick was scheduled to appear at a rally in Port Angeles on Tuesday evening at Downriggers restaurant in the Landing Mall on Railroad Avenue.
