Rear-end collision temporarily closes Port Angeles street

No injuries reported

PORT ANGELES — West Laurdisen Boulevard was briefly closed to traffic Wednesday morning due to a rear-end collision that resulted in no reportable injuries, said Port Angeles Police Department Corporal Sean Ryan.

At about 8:50 a.m., the driver and sole occupant of a Mitsubishi Eclipse slowed to turn into a driveway on the south side of the 1800 block of Lauridsen Boulevard, just west of L Street in Port Angeles, Ryan said.

The driver of the second vehicle, a Chevrolet Cruze, got distracted by “some sort of text message or an update on their phone” and rear ended the Eclipse, Ryan said. The driver received a ticket for following too close and for not having proof of insurance.

A second individual was a passenger in the Cruze, Ryan said.

The Cruze was disabled due of the collision and had to be removed by a tow truck, Ryan said.

The roadway was closed until the vehicles were removed.

The Lower Elwha Police Department was the first to respond to the scene, Ryan said.

“The fact that they showed up to help out is greatly appreciated,” he added.

The paddles are among the thousands of gifts being created for participants in the 2025 Tribal Canoe Journey, hosted this year by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. The event begins with the landing of dozens of native canoes at the mouth of the Elwha River on July 31 and continues with five days of celebration on the Lower Elwha reservation west of Port Angeles. As many as 10,000 indigenous peoples are expected to take part. The public is invited to help with giftmaking sessions, scheduled daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Heritage Center.
