PORT TOWNSEND — A 15-year-old Quilcene boy has been arrested forinvestigation of possession of silver certificate dollar bills that had been taken from a Holcomb Street home, a police spokesman said Wednesday.
Sgt. Joe Kaare said the teen was arrested after a relative who had read about the burglary noticed he had some of the certificates.
The student, who was living with his grandparents was found to have 10 of the silver certificates, said Kaare.
The youth told investigators that he got the certificates at a bank.
“He just said, ‘That’s my story and I’m going to stick to that story,”‘ Kaare said.
The teen was interviewed after his arrest Oct. 11.
A 1957 one dollar silver certificate looks similar to a dollar bill, but a dollar bill has green ink on the serial numbers and seal. The silver certificate uses blue ink.
The composition and design are the same and George Washington’s face is placed in the center of both.
Another difference is that a dollar bill is worth $1.
A one-dollar silver certificate can be worth between $5 and $20, according to various Internet auctions.
