Port Angeles: Bed tax board recommends field house funding

PORT ANGELES — A proposed field house for indoor soccer and tennis at the Clallam County Family YMCA site may be built after all.

The field house was removed from the city’s $13.8 million aquatic center bond issue that is on the ballots mailed out Wednesday for the general election ending Nov. 7.

Council members decided the building’s estimated $1.5 million cost would make the bond issue too expensive.

On Wednesday, the city’s 11-member lodging tax advisory committee unanimously recommended that the city provide $50,000 a year in lodging taxes for seven years for the project.

“It makes sense. It’s the right idea at the right time. This is exactly what these funds are for,” said attorney Dave Neupert, the committee’s Chamber of Commerce representative.

Now that recommendation will be reviewed by the City Council as part of the 2007 budget process.

The 26,000 square-foot building near the YMCA site at 302 S. Francis St., would be 200 feet long and 130 feet wide and accommodate about 240 spectators for tennis and soccer.

It would be where two homes, owned by the YMCA and rented out, now sit.

The city’s 4 percent lodging tax is collected from visitors to the city’s motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts and other lodging establishments.
