Port Angeles: Two airlines say they”re not interested in flights to Seattle

Big Sky Airlines and San Juan Airlines remain in the mix to replace service provided by Horizon Air at Fairchild International Airport in Port Angeles.

SkyWest Airlines and Salmon Air are out of the running, company officials said Thursday.

Horizon announced Nov. 6 that it would cease service effective Jan. 7, saying flights between Seattle and Port Angeles had become unprofitable.

“We are still in the review process,” Big Sky Chief Executive Vice President Craig Denney said in a telephone interview Thursday from his Billings, Mont., office.

But Big Sky insists that any expenses that exceed revenue be guaranteed by the community.

Big Sky wants a guarantee that 70 to 80 percent of seats are filled, or paid for, on each flight.

Meanwhile, San Juan Airlines, which is not looking for a subsidy, is making inquiries about setting up telephone service at Fairchild.

It wants to start flights between Port Angeles and Seattle’s Boeing field — with a free shuttle to Sea-Tac — by the end of December, company President Clyde Carlson said.
