Port Angeles: Proposed late-start in schools to get more scrutiny

PORT ANGELES — The School Board is rethinking implementation of late-start classes on Wednesday in all schools after parents begged to overturn the budget-cutting measure.
About two dozen frustrated parents attended the Port Angeles School District board’s Monday night meeting, and said that starting classes 1 hours late each Wednesday would take too much instructional time away from students and shift the district’s financial troubles to parents.
The School Board approved “late-start Wednesdays” district-wide to save $11,000 by reducing transportation through eliminating a staggered busing schedule.
The reduction was part of $600,000 in budget cuts for the 2003-04 school year.
As proposed, the measure would cut 7½ days from the school calendar.
Port Angeles High School and Stevens Middle School have a late-start schedule already in place.
