Port Angeles police: Shoes tie 6-foot-7 man to fifth home break-in

PORT ANGELES — The size-13 feet of a 6-foot-7 Port Angeles man police say kicked down doors to break into four buildings in the Joyce and Carlsborg areas have made him a suspect in a fifth burglary.

Aaron Scott Markishtum, 30, is to be arraigned on additional counts each of residential burglary and second-degree theft at 1:30 p.m. today in Clallam County Superior Court.

He was charged May 21 with two counts of residential burglary and one count each of second-degree burglary and second-degree attempted burglary stemming from four alleged break-ins in late April and early May and pleaded not guilty May 30.

Markishtum remained Thursday in the county jail on $25,000 bail.

May 15 burglary

The new charges stem from a May 15 burglary of a home in the 1400 block of South Pine Street in Port Angeles, according to court records.

The door was kicked in, police say. That was the mode of entry in four break-ins in the Joyce and Carlsborg areas, county sheriff’s deputies said, who found shoeprints on doors.

Port Angeles Officer John Nutter investigated the burglary report at the Pine Street home.

The home’s resident told the officer he had come home from a two-day trip out of town to find his back door kicked in. A shoeprint was on the door.

Several pieces of jewelry and credit cards were stolen, according to the police report.

Nutter said he learned May 20 that Markishtum had been arrested in other burglaries in which doors had been kicked in and shoeprints left on the doors.

Four burglaries

Markishtum has been charged in the April 27 burglary of a home in the 1900 block of Joyce-Piedmont Road, where a surveillance camera caught a man matching Markishtum’s description placing items from the home in a silver minivan.

The home’s door had been kicked in, a method of entry, deputies said, that linked Markishtum to the burglaries of a home on Freshwater Bay on April 28 and two buildings near Greywolf Elementary School in Carlsborg — one a garage on Addi Lane on April 27 and the other a home on Edgewood Lane on May 2.

Shoeprints found

Shoeprints from the size-13 Nike Air Max sneakers Markishtum was wearing when he was arrested were found on all four doors, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Nutter got a copy of Markishtum’s shoeprint from the Sheriff’s Office and matched it to the print found on the Pine Street home’s door, according to the police report.

In the earlier investigations, deputies tracked the minivan seen at the Joyce-Piedmont Road home to a family member of Markishtum’s.

Markishtum had been using it the past few days, they said.

The family member identified Markishtum in surveillance images taken from the Joyce-Piedmont Road home, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies arrested Markishtum on May 16 as he was walking along U.S. Highway 101 near Carlsborg.
