Port Angeles police investigating July 9 hit and run

Cyclist remains in serious condition

PORT ANGELES — Police continue to investigate a hit-and-run collision from July 9 that put a bicyclist in a hospital.

Steven Nelson, 60, on Tuesday remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to Harborview spokesperson Susan Gregg.

The person who hit him remains at large.

Port Angeles police officers were alerted to the hit-and-run on a bicyclist in the vicinity of Hill and Fourth streets in west Port Angeles at about 8:45 p.m. July 9. Nelson was later transported to Harborview.

A family member contacted the police, saying Nelson had been struck by a white Jeep, according to Deputy Chief Jason Viada.

In an interview with Peninsula Daily News, Nelson’s niece Elizabeth Drolet said her uncle has undergone several medical procedures and was on a breathing tube for four days following the collision.

Drolet said doctors have had to remove part of Nelson’s skull to address internal bleeding and that he’s been suffering from seizures.

Drolet said Nelson was on the ground for some time before he was discovered at the scene.

“It’s a miracle he is able to talk,” Drolet said in an email. “At this point, his possibility of survival is very low.”

Viada said anyone with information should call the non-emergency dispatch line at 360-452-4545. A report can be made to any officer 24 hours a day, Viada said.
