PORT ANGELES — A blaze that destroyed a detached garage on an alley behind West Fifth Street late Thursday night was probably caused by an electrical fire, the city’s fire marshal said.
The fire, just a few blocks from the Port Angeles Fire Department, knocked out power to area homes and destroyed a pickup truck parked inside the garage before firefighters extinguished it, Port Angeles Fire Marshal Ken Dubuc said Friday.
Firefighters were able to confine the fire to the garage and keep it from spreading to an attached storage structure, Dubuc said.
The owner of the garage, Kelmie Blake, and her son were home at the time of the fire. No one was injured.
Firefighters responded to the blaze, in the alley behind 214 W. Fifth St., at 11:40 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, the garage was engulfed in fire, and flames had burned through power wires coming from a transformer to the residence, Dubuc said.
Damage to the garage and contents is estimated at about $20,000, he said.
Power was cut off to several homes in the area for a few hours until City Light crews could restore their service.
