PORT ANGELES – Two candidates vying for City Council told a luncheon meeting Monday what they think needs fixing in the city.
Don Perry, a downtown businessman, and Paul Sawyer, a forest products industry retiree, are seeking City Council Position 6, being vacated by Richard Headrick, who is not seeking election.
About 70 people attended the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Port Angeles CrabHouse Restaurant.
Perry, an insurance broker who conducts walking tours of downtown and its historic “underground,” said he saw a couple of areas that could use improvement.
“There is as a gap over what to do with the downtown area,” he said. “We have shops closing their doors.”
He said knowing what to do with the downtown is essential to the city’s economy.
Affordable housing in Port Angeles is the second area needing improvement, he said.
“Sequim has taken a step forward in this area,” Perry said, “and this is an area where we can work with them and find out what kind of incentives they are giving to builders and what might work for us.”
