PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Arts Center will feature Harry von Stark’s photography and Karsten Boysen’s sculptures during the month of September.
The exhibit, “Floating Steel/Flying Sparks,” opens at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at 701 Water St. and will be on display until Oct. 1.
The black-and-white photography of von Stark documents the complete build of a fishing trawler bound for the Bering Sea from start to finish.
He spent 2½ years depicting how to make steel float — a journey he narrates in his coming book, “Floating Steel,” which will be on sale in the gallery.
“Unlimited access to the Anacortes shipyards enabled me to include various images of men and women constructing steel ships and their repair in the 21st century,” von Stark said.
Boysen’s sculptures emulate nature, borrowing inspiration from the DNA spiral “that imparts life to all things,” organizers said.
“Art is all about mystery, stealth and transformation,” Boysen said.
“The materials I use are selected by a twist, a bend, a crumple — almost as if returning to a natural state. The mind is silenced, the self gets out of the way and the work is allowed to express itself.”
