PORT ANGELES — A federal grant will allow the area’s drug task force to continue its efforts for at least another year.
The task force — the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team — faced cutbacks and possible termination because of funding issues and a lack of support from other police agencies until Tuesday, when the Clallam County commissioners approved a $183,846 federal grant contract.
“It’s the core revenue for the project,” Clallam County Undersheriff Fred DeFrang said after the commissioners approved the agreement.
“So now we’ll keep working with the jurisdictions to keep going with the project.”
DeFrang heads up the task force in addition to his other duties in the Sheriff’s Department.
The Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance Program grant will keep team operating through June 2004.
