Nordland man dies in wreck; road to Hood Canal Bridge closed for 3 hours

SHINE — A Nordland man was killed Tuesday afternoon when the motor home he was driving swerved across the double yellow line and collided with a car at about 2:30 p.m., the State Patrol said.

David M. Bodkin, 67, was found dead at the scene of the wreck on state Highway 104 at its intersection with Teal Lake Road, the State Patrol said. He was traveling alone.

Two 17-year-old women from Bellevue — Katherine K. Duff-Dings and Anastasia P. Baucke — were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after they were extricated from their car, where they were trapped for several hours.

Both lanes of Highway 104 were blocked for more than three hours.

Duff-Dings suffered leg, neck and internal injuries, the State Patrol said, while Baucke was bruised and had a broken left hand.

Late Tuesday, Duff-Dings was listed in serious condition while Bauke was in stable and satisfactory condition, according to a Harborview spokeswoman.

The State Patrol gave this account of the wreck:

The motor home was traveling westbound on Route 104 near the intersection of Teal Lake Road, about three miles west of the Hood Canal Bridge, when it crossed into the opposite lane as the driver attempted to negotiate a curve.

It struck a Lexus traveling eastbound.

The motor home spun 180 degrees and rolled into the westbound ditch facing east, while the Lexus came to rest in the center of the highway.

Westbound traffic was detoured to Paradise Bay Road to state Highway 19 — also known as Beaver Valley Road — and back to 104, while eastbound traffic was detoured to Shine Road before it was allowed back on 104.

Police pronounced the scene clear at 6:24 p.m.

It was the second wreck at the intersection in as many days.

On Monday, a driver collided with a vehicle that was turning onto Teal Lake Road when it passed on the right. That crash resulted in only minor injuries, police said.
