NEWS BRIEFS: Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center Board meeting at special time Wednesday . . . and other items

SEQUIM — Wednesday’s meeting of the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center board will be held at a special time of 4 p.m. at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

The change from the usual 5 p.m. start is due to a longer agenda than normal and to a second group booked to use the library room after the board meeting, according to a news release.

$600 scholarship

The East Jefferson chapter of Puget Sound Anglers is offering a $600 college scholarship to a high school student from the community.

Students graduating from either Chimacum, Quilcene or Port Townsend high schools this June are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship was created to promote more interest in the pursuit of studies in the area of marine biology or fisheries science or oceanography, or conservation or ecology.

Students are asked to write a brief history about themselves and their interest in the aforementioned educational areas. Contact information, high school, school they plan to attend and focus of education should be included.

The deadline is May 20.

Law memorial

PORT ANGELES — Law Enforcement Memorial Day events will be held at Liberty Park next to Clallam County Courthouse on Lincoln Street from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Local law enforcement personnel will take part in the annual 21 Salute Bell Ringing ceremony in honor and memory of fallen law enforcement heroes.

Roadshow on multiple sclerosis

PORT ANGELES — Experts from the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Swedish Neuroscience Institute and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will bring a traveling roadshow on multiple sclerosis (MS) education and information to the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St., on Saturday, May 30.

This free event is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Seminar topics include comprehensive care for MS, cognition of MS, the role of MRIs in MS diagnosis and treatment, vocation counseling and occupational therapy.

The public is invited to learn, share and connect with others in the community living with MS.

Lunch will be provided.

Family, friends and caregivers are welcome.

Genealogical meet

CHIMACUM — Professional genealogist Claudia Breland will be the guest speaker at the Jefferson County Genealogical Society meeting at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Breland will present “Discover More About Your Ancestors Than Just the Obituaries.”

Finding and using historical newspapers, Breland will demonstrate the many types of articles that can be found, how to use online newspaper databases (free and subscription-based) and how to find newspapers that aren’t online.

Composting tips topic of ‘Green Thumb’ lecture

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Waste Reduction Coordinator Meggan Uecker will provide information to help home gardeners integrate composting into any size garden or space in the county commissioners’ meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., at noon Thursday.

Attendees can get information about space saving when composting, types of composting and other tips.

This presentation is part of the “Green Thumb Garden Tips” brown bag series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles.

The presentations are free and open to the public, and people are invited to bring their own lunch.

Donations to help offset copying costs for handouts are accepted.
