QUILCENE — Quilcene-Brinnon Dollars for Scholars has been awarded a $5,000 matching grant from Scholarship America, the parent organization to Dollars for Scholars affiliates across the country.
The grant, if matched with an equal amount of funds raised by Quilcene-Brinnon Dollars for Scholars, will provide deserving students the opportunity to receive financially impactful, renewable scholarships.
“Renewable, financially impactful scholarships that are directed to students with the greatest financial need will be an important tool to improving educational outcomes in our Dollars for Scholars communities,” said Scholarship America’s president and CEO, Lauren Segal.
“Our goal with the Dollars for Scholars Affiliate Matching program is to partner with our affiliates and their local supporters to build and sustain renewable scholarship opportunities so that more students across the country can complete their degree or program with a reduced level of debt.”
Qualified Dollars for Scholars applicants are high school seniors and college undergraduates who reside in the communities of Brinnon and Quilcene.
Quilcene/Brinnon Dollars for Scholars was formed out of the joint effort of two community service clubs: the Quilcene Lions Club and the Quilcene/Brinnon Chamber of Commerce.
Comic swap meet
CHIMACUM — The Comic Book Swap Meet returns to the area Saturday at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road.
The event is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The swap meet is a miniature version of a comic and pop culture convention. The show will feature a vendor room with comics sellers, special guests, area artists, game developers, cosplay, a gaming room and more.
The guest of honor is comic creator/artist Matthew Southworth.
Southworth is known as the co-creator of the crime noir series “Stumptown.” He is also known for his work on “Spider-Man,” “The X-Men,” “The Punisher” and other well-known comic book series.
Admission to the comic swap meet is $5 but decreases to $2 if attendees bring a nonperishable item for the local food bank.
There will be a raffle of “Doctor Who”-related items donated by local resident Jenny Ellison.
The proceeds from the raffle and other donations are to benefit the Chimacum High Band and color guard, and help them get to and perform in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu.

NAMI picnic instead
SEQUIM — NAMI of Clallam County will not hold its regular monthly NAMI affiliate meeting this month.
Instead, it will host its annual NAMI picnic/potluck at the Dungeness Recreation Area from 4 p.m. to dusk Saturday.
This event is for NAMI members, loved ones with mental illness and their family, as well as NAMI friends.

Ice-cream social
SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, will have its last ice-cream social of the summer from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
This is a time change from previous socials.
Banana splits or sundaes are $5 each.
Proceeds will go to benefit the Sequim Prairie Grange Building Fund to help with costs of building projects.
