Talk, book signing set at Port Angeles Library

PORT ANGELES — Bainbridge Island author Suzanne Selfors will speak at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Selfors will discuss her life as a writer, her recent work and answer questions about the writing process.

Fans of her books as well as writers interested in learning about publishing for young people are welcome.

Odyssey Bookshop will be on hand with Selfors’ books available for purchase.

Selfors is the author of the popular Imaginary Veterinary series.

The first book in that series, The Sasquatch Escape, was selected as a featured title in the North Olympic Library System’s Battle of the Books event, a countywide literacy competition for fourth-grade students.

Search for soldiers

Janna Hoehn, a resident of Hawaii, is asking for help in locating friends and classmates of local fallen soldiers of the Vietnam War as part of her work with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

Hoehn wants to put photographs with the names of the fallen on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Any photos will be submitted to the Wall of Faces, the online counterpart to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and placed in the future education center that will be adjacent to the Vietnam memorial.

Hoehn is looking for people who know the following:

Clallam County

■– Douglas G. Foster of Beaver, 1947-69

– Donald R. Kraft of Sappho, 1946-69

■– Norman E. Lodholm of Forks, 1948-68

Jefferson County

■– Stephen R. Lopeman of Port Townsend, 1950-69

■– Timothy J. McMahon of Port Townsend, 1946-66

■– William T. Smith of Port Townsend, 1949-70

Hoehn is also looking for an individual who would like to volunteer to do “some footwork in the community.”

Peace presentations

PORT TOWNSEND — The Social Justice Council of the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will host two presentations at the fellowship hall, 2333 San Juan Ave., that will stimulate our ability to wage peace.”

Both events start at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, David Hartsough, an internationally known organizer and activist for justice and peace, will speak.

A co-founder of the Nonviolent Peaceforce, Hartsough will tell stories from his recently published memoir, Waging Peace.

He will talk about what it means to make a lifelong commitment to justice and nonviolent action. This event is co-sponsored by Port Townsend Friends Meeting.

On Friday, a presentation titled “When Jewish and Arab Women Meet, Peace Can Come” will be held.

Yaara Taal, 23, of Sderot, Israel, and Deema Yusuf, 19, of Ramallah, Palestine, will discuss their work as peacemakers, their early experiences living in areas of violent conflict and their ongoing struggles and passion for peace.

Taal and Yusuf are participants in Creativity for Peace, a New Mexico-based nonprofit with operations in the Middle East. They are students of Peace Studies at Lane Community College in Oregon.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Refreshments and opportunities to talk with the presenters will follow.

Chili cook-off set

PORT LUDLOW — A chili cook-off to determine the “Best Republican Chili Cook” will be held at the Port Ludlow Beach Club, 121 Marina View Drive, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The event is sponsored by the Jefferson County Republican Party.

Republican candidates running for offices in the November election have been invited to speak.

The cost to attend and sample chili is $15 per person. Side dishes and sodas will be provided.
