NEWS BRIEFS: Olympic Hot Springs Road closed at park boundary … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Olympic National Park has closed its Elwha River area at the park boundary on Olympic Hot Springs Road.

According to the park website, there is a potential for flooding from heavy rainfall and excess snowmelt.

Whiskey Bend Road is closed for the season.

Pipeline protests

Olympic Climate Action, in partnership with the Clallam Progressives and Racial Justice Collective, will hold two protests of the Dakota Access Pipeline on Saturday.

The demonstrations, both from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., will take place outside the U.S. Bank branches in Port Angeles, 134 E. Seventh St., and Sequim, 101 W. Washington St. A protest was also held last Saturday.

U.S. Bank is among a number of banks financing the pipeline, according to a news release.

Participants are advised to bring signs if possible and dress for the weather.

The press release states that “this protest is not against our local bank branches, staffed by our neighbors and doing everyday community banking, but rather with their corporate headquarters … .”

Similar protests by another group, aimed at Wells Fargo and Chase banks, are ongoing in Port Townsend.

For more information, contact Ed Chadd at 360-775-9234 about the Port Angeles demonstration or Carole Woods at 360-775-3877 about the Sequim protest. More information is also available at https://olyclimate.org.
