Man who held police at 7-hour standoff now held on $5,000 bail

PORT ANGELES — A Clallam County Superior Court judge has set bail at $5,000 bail for a Port Angeles man who was involved in a seven-hour standoff with police last week.

Justin G. Mason, 26, was arrested Thursday for investigation of unlawful imprisonment, stalking and harassment after he barricaded himself into a house 506 ½ S. H St., on the corner of the 1500 block of West Fifth Street in Port Angeles, court charging papers said.

Mason was reported by his girlfriend, who told police the two had been arguing and that Mason threatened “death by cop” if she returned to the house with officers, court documents show.

Mason surrendered without incident after Port Angeles police, Sequim police and Clallam County sheriff’s deputies formed a perimeter around the house and a crisis negotiator spoke with Mason.

A firearm was found inside the house. Police said there was no evidence that it was used illegally.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Ann Lundwall said the case may wind up with the city of Port Angeles in district court, but moved for a 72-hour hold and a protection order in superior court.

The alleged victim told that judge that there was no need for a protection order, but Judge B. Brooke Taylor set bail at $5,000 and signed a protection order for her.

Formal charges are expected to be filed Tuesday.
