Parts of the old eastern half of the Hood Canal Bridge are headed for possible use in a waterfront development at Sidney on Vancouver Island north of Victoria — after a short detour.
The old components of the bridge were hauled away by their new owner, Victoria-based Marker Developments, in May as the east side of the bridge was replaced.
The three-quarters of a mile of bridge parts — all but the trusses, said Becky Hixson, bridge communications manager, in April — were towed to Cowichan Bay to be dismantled at the industrial site of Western Stevedoring, said Mike Comquist, Marker Development vice president for business development, last year.
But, the Victoria Times-Colonist
[ www.timescolonist.com ] reported Saturday, area residents didn’t want the months of dust, debris and potential environmental damage they said would come with the project and it was stopped.
Instead, Grant Rogers, owner of Marker Developments, is moving the bridge parts to Vancouver, British Columbia, for deconstruction, beginning the week of March 15.
Rogers wouldn’t name the Vancouver company but told the newspaper there are “no issues” in getting the work done.
