Man stabbed in back at Jessie Webster Park in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Police are seeking a man who reportedly stabbed another man after asking him for a cigarette in Jessie Webster Park on Monday.

A Port Angeles man, who was not identified for safety reasons, was treated at Olympic Medical Center for a half-inch-wide and “very deep” stab wound, Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said.

“We’ve been working through the possibilities, and we haven’t come up with a suspect,” Smith said.

The man told police he was walking on the north side of the heavily wooded park off East Second Street at about noon when he was approached by a 30-to-35-year-old man.

Felt a ‘bump’

When he told the other man he didn’t have a cigarette, he turned away and felt a “bump” from behind him, police said.

The man did not realize he had been stabbed until he arrived at a nearby gas station.

“He realized he had been stabbed when he saw the blood,” Smith said. “That’s not uncommon in stabbings.”

The man walked from the gas station to OMC. He told police he had never seen the other man before and thought he was “new to town.”

Police are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses, Smith said.

“These things take a little while to work through,” he said.

The man police are seeking is described as Caucasian and between 5-foot-11 and 6 feet tall.

He has shoulder-length light-brown hair with some blond highlights, police said.

He was last seen walking eastbound on Second Street wearing jeans and a dark-blue hooded sweatshirt.
