PORT TOWNSEND — A small boat overturned off Port Hudson Marina on Sunday, and one of the three sailors on board died soon after being brought back to shore.
Stephen I. Halpin, 57, of Huson, Mont., was sailing with his wife and another woman as part of a SCAMP boat gathering when the boat overturned, said Officer Luke Bogues, spokesman for the Port Townsend Police Department.
The names of the boat’s other two occupants were not immediately available Sunday.
A SCAMP boat — or Small Craft Advisor Magazine Project — is a roughly 12-foot sailing dinghy designed for two to four passengers.
Another sailor picked up the people in the water and returned them to shore, said East Jefferson Fire Rescue Duty Chief Gordon Pomeroy.
Halpin went into cardiac arrest on the way back to the marina, and the boaters called 9-1-1, he said.
East Jefferson Fire-Rescue and Port Townsend Police responded to the marina.
“He had a [do not resuscitate] order. We were requested to stop CPR,” Pomeroy said.
Halpin had a pre-existing medical condition and was considered terminal, he said.
