LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Cupid to string bow for sweet weekend ahead on Peninsula

THIS VALENTINE’S DAY weekend offers plenty of variety for purposeful singles, dedicated couples and everyone in between across the Peninsula.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, Jerry’s show and the talent finals have been postponed due to renovations this week.

■ Today at Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., the open mic starts at 9 p.m.

On Friday, celebrate the Second Friday Art Rock with Pufnstuff (Ches Ferguson, Mike Pace, Terry Smith and Paul Stehr-Green) as they play a jam with artist Benji at 8 p.m. $3 cover.

On Saturday, it’s an anti-Valentine’s Day party with DJ RoBoTiX at 9 p.m.

■ Today at the Lazy Moon Craft Tavern, 130 S. Lincoln St., the band Classic Gold, with Terry Roszatycki, Jim Hensen and Jerry Robison, plays old rock ’n’ roll tunes from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, Bill and Rudy play from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Jim Basnight comes from Indianola with his solo show of original music from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Wednesdays, Ches Ferguson & Friends perform classic rock with a few originals thrown in from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave., Twisted Roots plays bluegrass and Western swing from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. For those 21 and older after 9 p.m. $3 cover.

■ On Friday at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, there’s a jam session from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by Dave and Rosalie Secord with their Luck of the Draw band and special guests No Batteries Required, a local barbershop quartet, until 8 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Metta Room, 132 E. Front St., there’s a free all-ages zydeco dance with lessons from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. DJ Bizzle follows at 9:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at The Dam Bar, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112, Gordon Bowlby hosts a jam session from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Coo Coo Nest, 1017 E. First St., heavy-metal bands Northern Bastard, Xoth, Death in the Family and more start playing at 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at Elliott’s Antique Emporium, 135 E. First St., Hawaii Amor plays Hawaiian love songs and traditional music on the ukulele from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

■ On Saturday, Studio Bob and The Alle stage, 118½ E. Front St., present the paintings of local artists Brian Hogan and What About Bob? during a reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by the rockabilly hoppin’ tunes of The Soul Ducks from 8 p.m. to midnight.

■ On Sunday at Cafe New Day, 102 W. Front St., Gerald Braude plays acoustic finger-style jazz from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

■ On Tuesdays at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Wally’s Boys play jazz dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

Sequim

■ Today at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Cort Armstrong and friends entertain from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Lush Life, with Trevor Hanson, Jim Rosand and Joey Lazzaro, offer guitar-driven jazz from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at Stymie’s Bar and Grill at the Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Scott and Barry play classic rock from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St., High Country, the husband-wife duo of Rusty and Duke Moroz with drumming backup by Jerry Robison, plays classic country and love songs for the public during a Valentine’s Day dance from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No cover.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Vivian and Phil Williams join the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association as special guests during a free public performance from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Then, from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., the All Star Band and the Williamses team up with caller Juanita Ramsey-Jevne for an evening of old-time, grange-style dancing with contras, squares, polkas and partner dances. Instruction is at 6:30 p.m. All ages welcome. $5 donation.

On Sunday, there’s a Sweet Heart Dance from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the Buck Ellard Band playing. Admission is $10 for individuals, $15 for couples or $25 for families. Food is provided.

■ On Sunday at the Shipley Center, 192 Hammond St., Vienna Barron and Dottie Lilly host a musical jam from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Sunday at the Holiday Inn Express, 1441 W. Washington St., Gil Yslas plays original acoustic variety from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Free and family-friendly.

■ On Wednesday at Nourish, 1345 S. Sequim Ave., Victor Reventlow hosts the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with sign-ups at 6 p.m.

Blyn

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, dance to Haywire, a band that plays country the way you remember it, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, The Funnaddicts play a little something old and a little something new from the ’70s to ’90s from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Friday in the Rainforest Bar, listen to a little rock and a little blues played by R.L. Heyer from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Langley Connections plays all your favorites from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Port Hadlock

■ On Friday at the Ajax Cafe, 21 N. Water St., Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Sundays at Zoog’s Caveman Cookin’, 141 Chimacum Road, join the all-ages open mic from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Musicians, singers, poets, comics, dramatists and everyone in between are welcome.

Port Ludlow

■ Today in the Fireside Room at the Resort at Port Ludlow, 1 Heron Road, Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 5 p.m. to closing.

Port Townsend

■ Today at the Cellar Door, 940 Water St., come check out this week’s local DJ starting at 9 p.m.

On Friday, Jim Nyby & the F Street Band play New Orleans R&B from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, there’s a Valentine’s Day Jazz Show with Carla Main and her Swingin’ Sweethearts from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. $10 cover.

On Tuesdays, join the weekly jazz night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This week, the Peninsula College Vocal Jazz Ensemble plays the free event.

■ Every Thursday, The Boiler Room, 711 Water St., host an all-ages open mic at 8 p.m., with sign-ups at 7 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Uptown Pub & Grill, 1016 Lawrence St., Zach Fleury, a songwriter and storyteller, presents a lyrical, toe-tapping evening of alternative, indie and acoustic sounds starting at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, The Party Club, with Ruby Fitch and DJ Jarrod Paul, play a DJ Valentine’s Day dance/benefit for Global Visionaries from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

On Tuesdays, join in on an open mic hosted by Jarrod Bramson at 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., Pies on the Run performs Western swing, bluegrass, country ballads and more from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. For those 21 and older.

■ Every Monday at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., Trevor Hanson plays guitar from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Every Monday at The Tin Brick, 232 Taylor St., an open mic hosted by Jack Reid starts with sign-ups at 6 p.m., the opening act at 6:30 p.m. and the mic opening at 7 p.m. For all ages, with poets welcome. For more information, phone 360-379-4181.

■ On Tuesdays at Sirens, 823 Water St., there’s a fiddler jam session starting at 7 p.m.

On Wednesdays, join the open mic starting at 9 p.m.

Discovery Bay

■ Every Saturday at Snug Harbor Cafe, 281732 U.S. Highway 101, Skeeter Ezell plays covers of Roy Orbison and the like from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

High notes

■ Today at the Key City Public Theatre, 419 Washington St., Port Townsend, Portland, Ore.’s Foghorn Stringband brings American roots and energetic peeks at the future with Caleb Klauder (mandolin, fiddle, vocals), Stephen Lind (fiddle, banjo), Nadine Landry (bass) and Reeb Willms (guitar) from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Tickets are $18 and are available at the playhouse box office, by phone at 360-385-5278 and at www.keycitypublictheatre.org.

■ On Saturday at the Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend, the square dance and social is headed up by Airstream Traveler, with Gary Pasco, Carol Hardy, Roger Pick and Libby Reid on fiddle, guitar, concertina and mandolin. Dave Thielk calls traditional squares, circles, reel and mixers.

All dances are taught starting at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $5, with those 16 and younger admitted free.

■ On Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St., Port Townsend, The Dukes of Dabob celebrate Mardi Gras with New Orleans-style Dixieland jazz from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There’ll be a pancake dinner, face painting, mask-making, a Mardi Gras procession and more.

Suggested donation is $10 for adults, $5 for kids.
