PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County burn ban has been canceled early.
East Jefferson Fire-Rescue announced Tuesday that due to the extremely high relative humidity lowering the fire danger in Jefferson County, the Jefferson County Fire Chief’s association agreed on canceling the countywide burn ban.
The original burn ban was planned to be in place until Oct. 1.
Clallam County plans to stay with the Oct. 1 date for lifting the annual burn ban.
Land clearing burning is allowed by permit only.
Recreational outdoor fire burning for materials that are not rubbish or contained in an incinerator are limited to outdoor fireplaces, portable out door fireplaces, barbecue grill/pit and has a total fuel area of less than three feet in diameter and two feet in height.
Recreational fires can be for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes.
Fires used for the disposal of debris or rubbish are not considered recreational and are illegal.
Burning closures can be enacted at anytime, in the event of air stagnation conditions that are determined by the Washington State Department of Ecology, the Olympic Clean Air Authority and/or the Department of Natural Resources.
