JEFFERSON: Can you save money on your PSE bill?

Puget Sound Energy customers in Jefferson County won’t be eligible — at least for now — for Puget Sound Energy’s new program to charge for electricity based on the time of day.

Even though most residents in Port Townsend and elsewhere in the county now have the new “smart” electricity meters that track power use by time of day, PSE has elected not to include them in the pilot pricing program which begins May 1 and ends Oct. 1.

PSE decided to limit the trial to customers in other counties who (1) have had the new meters since at least December and (2) who already have been receiving information from the utility on their electricity usage by time of day.

Those customers will get notices in May and see the effect of the new rates in June, said spokeswoman Dorothy Bracken.

But the utility wants to put all of its customers on time-of-use rates, and the program will no doubt be extended to Jefferson and elsewhere if state regulators approve its continuation.

About 300,000 of PSE’s 920,000 electricity customers will be in pilot program, including about 19,000 of the company’s 102,000 customers in neighboring Kitsap County.
