FORKS — The West End’s community pool is on its last lap toward completion.
On Friday, Quillayute Valley Park and Recreation District Chair Barb Gronseth signed a $2.2 million construction contract with Craig Heckman of Vision Builders, sealing the deal for the long-awaited facility.
The contract with the Port Angeles-based construction company calls for a May 2005 completion date.
Sandra Carter, vice chair of the park and recreation district board, said Heckman plans to start mobilizing immediately.
During an emergency board meeting Friday, the district hired Craig Ritchie as its attorney to review the construction contract.
The Quillayute Valley Aquatic Center will be built at the corner of Division Street and Maple Avenue near Forks City Hall, on land deeded by the U.S. Forest Service in 1979.
The plan, designed by SERA Architects of Portland, Ore., calls for a lap pool, family pool, whirlpool spa, body slide, water spouts and pipe falls. The family pool will have a beach-style entry for easy access and a shallow area for toddlers.
