CHIMACUM—A failed insulator caused a power outage resulting in about 6,000 electrical customers going without power for four hours on Monday night.
Power was returned at about midnight to Port Ludlow, Chimacum, Port Hadlock and Marrowstone Island, said Jim Parker, Jefferson County Public Utility District manager.
Parker said the insulator, which is designed to keep transmission wires a safe distance from a power pole, failed, causing the power to arc to the pole and blow several fuses.
The loud pop heard at about 8 p.m. was the fuses exploding, Parker said.
Reports that the outage was caused by a truck striking the pole were erroneous, Parker said. It is not known why the insulator failed.
