EYE ON CLALLAM: Sales tax cut expected to become official

The three Clallam County commissioners will conduct a public hearing on a sales tax cut and are expected to approve Opportunity Fund grants to the Port of Port Angeles and the city of Port Angeles when they meet Tuesday.

The regular session will begin at 10 a.m. in the commissioners’ boardroom (160) at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Commissioners already have approved a 0.2 percent sales tax reduction that will take effect July 1.

The public hearing is needed to pass an ordinance making the change that was approved by resolution.

Last week, commissioners said they would approve a $1 million grant to the Port of Port Angeles for development of a proposed composites recycling center and $285,952 to the city of Port Angeles for phase two of a $17 million makeover of its waterfront.

Commissioners also will conduct a public hearing on creating a new chapter in the Carlsborg sewer system county code.

Also on the agenda:

â–  An agreement with Peninsula Behavioral Health for screening and case management services in the Clallam County jail, as well as a public health syringe services program.

â–  Agreement with the state Military Department and U.S. Department of Homeland Security for Operation Stonegarden.

â–  Increasing funding for the paving of Old Olympic Highway from U.S. Highway 101 to the Siebert Creek Bridge.

Commissioners plan a work session at 9 a.m. Monday to discuss some of the items on the Tuesday agenda.

Port of Port Angeles

Port of Port Angeles commissioners will receive an update on plans to restore scheduled passenger service to William R. Fairchild International Airport when they meet Tuesday.

Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. in their headquarters, 338 W. First St.

Forecast Inc. will present its findings on airline service at 9:15 a.m. The Denver-based firm holds a $50,000 contract with the port to provide an Air Service Market Demand Study by June 30.

Other agenda items:

■ Commissioners’ choices of which tourism agencies will divide at least $65,000 in Community Partner Program grants.

â–  An update on the proposed Composites Recycling Technology Center.

â–  A first-quarter operating report and department highlights.

â–  A contract for demolition of concrete at the site of the former KPly mill site.

â–  Purchase of an excavator.

Sequim City Council

The Sequim City Council will hear a presentation on the Association of Washington Cities’ Operation Strong Cities when they meet Monday.

The regular meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St.

The council also will consider appointments to the Parks and Recreation Board and the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.

Port Angeles School Board

Port Angeles School Board members will discuss facilities and plans for a teacher walkout when they meet Tuesday.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. for a work session to prioritize repairs of aging facilities. They will convene a special meeting at 8 p.m. to discuss a teacher walkout planned May 18.

Both meetings will be at the Central Services Building, 216 E. Fourth St.

During the special meeting, the board will consider approving the cancellation of school Monday, May 18, during a one-day teacher walkout.

The makeup day would be Monday, June 15. This would be the last day of school for all students, except seniors, who would not be required to attend.

Sequim schools

The Sequim School Board is expected to choose semifinalists for superintendent Monday.

The board will meet in executive session beginning at 8:30 a.m. to evaluate candidates and is expected to announce finalists at 5 p.m.

The meeting will be in the district boardroom at 503 N. Sequim Ave.

A new superintendent will replace Kelly Shea, who has accepted a position with the East Valley School District in Spokane Valley.

Forks City Council

The Forks City Council will discuss a memorandum of understanding with the state military department emergency management division when it meets Monday.

The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 500 E. Division St.

The agreement would be for a Quillayute Airport staging area.

The council also will consider declaring some property surplus.

Clallam PUD

The Clallam County Public Utility District commissioners will hear an update on conservation and renewable energy systems when they meet Monday.

Commissioners will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the boardroom at the Port Angeles office, 2431 E. U.S. Highway 101.

They also will award an employee an excellence in performance certificate.

Clallam Conservation District

Clallam Conservation District commissioners will discuss summer interns and cooperator and cost-share agreements when they meet Tuesday.

Commissioners will meet at 3 p.m. at Suite H in Armory Square, 228 W. First St., Port Angeles.

They also will preview a salmon recovery conference stream flow improvement presentation.

Peninsula College

Peninsula College trustees will discuss the operating budget for 2015-16 when they meet Tuesday.

The meeting will be at 2 p.m. at the Port Townsend branch of Peninsula College. Trustees will meet in the schoolhouse at Fort Worden at 298 Battery Way.

Ecosystem Recovery Network

The Strait of Juan de Fuca Ecosystem Recovery Network Local Integrating Organization will discuss education, planning and funding for projects from Cape Flattery to Point Wilson when it meets Friday.

The quarterly meeting, which is open to the public, is set from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe’s Red Cedar Hall on Old Blyn Highway in Blyn.

Presentations will deal with coastal hazards and the effects of windstorms on nearshores.

Quillayute Valley schools

The Quillayute Valley School Board will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the library at Forks High School, 261 S. Spartan Ave.
