Detour spurs Pine Street pavement repairs

PORT ANGELES – One of the Eighth Street bridges detour routes, the Pine Street Extension at U.S. Highway 101, will be closed for a weekend sometime this month.

The street must be resurfaced because of cracks and deterioration caused by increased traffic volume, the City Council was told at its Tuesday night meeting.

The council unanimously approved up to $75,000 for resurfacing the road where it meets U.S. Highway 101. No work will be done on the highway.

Parsons RCI Inc. of Sumner is replacing the two Eighth Street bridges over Tumwater and Valley creeks in an $18.4 million project expected to last about 15 months.

The Tumwater Creek Bridge was closed on Aug. 20 and the Valley Creek Bridge was closed on Sept. 24.

Traffic has been detoured along several routes, including the Pine Street Extension and Highway 101 as well as the Tumwater Truck Route and Tumwater Street.

City Engineer Steve Sperr said work will be done on a weekend to minimize traffic effects on the main detour routes to the city’s west side during the bridges construction.

Hopefully, the project will last just one weekend, said Mark Madson, city manager.

City Traffic Engineer Jim Mahlum said the work would be done sometime later this month, depending upon the weather and the contractor’s schedule.

He doesn’t know when the street will be closed.

Lakeside Industries will resurface 75 feet of the street’s southbound lane and 110 feet of the northbound lane, he said.
