PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School District has awarded Interwest Construction in Carlsborg a $4.6 million contract for earthwork an utilities for the new Stevens Middle School.
The board of directors at a special meeting Wednesday unanimously approved the agreement for $4,667,705.
Voting on the bid package were board president Sarah Methner, vice president Sandy Long and directors Mary Hebert and Kirsten Williams. Director Stan Williams had an excused absence.
“This is the first of many bid packages over the next few months,” Superintendent Marty Brewer said.
He pointed out that the contract came in under budget and went to a local company.
It is the board’s goal that 40 percent of the project’s work and services go to local businesses.
Funding for the 87,000-square-foot facility comes from a five-year, $52.6 million capital levy voters passed in 2020 that also paid for the installation of safety vestibules in all of the district’s elementary schools.
A 20-year, $146 million bond for capital improvements approved by voters in November will support the replacement of Franklin Elementary School and Port Angeles High School.
The new middle school will double the size of the existing facility, which opened in 1960 and has been renovated twice. The gym will be substantially renovated as part of the project.
Fencing around the site could go up as early as next week, Brewer said.
