Chain gang busy in Clallam County

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang picked up 940 pounds of roadside litter from 8 miles of Edgewood Drive during the week of Dec. 2-6.

Crew members cleaned up 940 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Sisson Road.

Crew members assisted the county Roads Division by cleaning culverts and ditches along Key, Tamarack, Ramona, Freshwater Bay, Freshwater Park, King, Lawrence, Everett, Hudson, Prawn, Silver, Chinook, Elwha River, Ennis Creek, Township Line and Striped Peak roads.

Crew members also painted over graffiti on the Deer Park Loop and Crown Z Water Road.

Crew members picked up straw at Leitz Farms.

Crew members spread grass seed in a ditch along West Bluff Drive.

Crew members also brushed and chipped Tamarack, Key, Striped Peak and Lawrence roads in preparation for chip sealing next year

During the week of Dec. 23-27, crew members picked up 800 pounds of roadside litter from 8 miles of Blue Mountain Road, 240 pounds of roadside litter from 6 miles of Woods Road, 200 pounds of roadside litter from 8 miles of O’Brien Road, 100 pounds of roadside litter from 3 miles of Township Road, 100 pounds of litter from 6 miles of Deer Par Road and 1,020 pounds of roadside litter from 10 miles of Sekiu and Clallam Bay roads.

Notable items found along the roadways include two needles, five tires, a sewing machine, a TV, a propane tank, a tarp, four plastic totes, a booster seat, two car seats, a bicycle tire, a gas can, a computer printer, a hot glue gun and a lamp.

Crew members cleaned up 300 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at Deer Park.

Crew members assisted the county Roads Division by cleaning trucks and equipment at the county shop.

Crew members also brushed and chipped along Freshwater Bay, King, Lawrence, Chinook, Silver, Hudson, and Farmington roads

During 2019, the chain gang has cleaned 518 miles of roadway, picked up 26,780 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 200,600 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter, recycled 320 pounds of aluminum, trimmed 94,358 feet of guardrail, pulled or sprayed approximately 31,580 Scotch broom plants and brushed 16 miles of county right-of-way.

For the Forest Service, the chain gang cleaned 11.1 miles of forest service roads or trails during 2019.
