65th anniversary feted by local insurance agency
PORT ANGELES — Callis & Associates Insurance is celebrating 65 years in business on the North Olympic Peninsula.
The independent insurance agency was formed in 1948 by Gordon Sandison and was acquired by Steve and Gwyn Callis in 1977.
Their son, Andy, is now the agency’s president. He’s been very active lately in giving presentations to local clubs and organizations about the federal Affordable Care Act.
“I believe our commitment to service in our surrounding communities is even stronger now than 65 years ago,” said Andy Callis.
“Our agents are consistently and actively involved in community service through social service clubs such as Rotary and Soroptimist.
“Now a second-generation family-owned insurance agency, we are committed to helping our clients find the best combination of service and products.”
In the past 65 years, the agency has seen a number of changes, including going paperless, adding new insurance carriers and expanding its customer base to include individuals, families, businesses and nonprofit groups in all of Washington and Oregon.
The firm is located at 806 S. Vine St. and can be reached at 360-452-2314.

RV park wins ‘best of’ award
PORT ANGELES — For the sixth consecutive year, Elwha Dam RV Park has been selected for the 2013 Best of Port Angeles Award in the Recreational Vehicle Parks category by the U.S. Local Business Association.
The association’s “Best of Local Business” Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country.
Each year, the association identifies companies it believes have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category.
These are local companies that “enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.”
Nationwide, less than 1 percent of award recipients qualify as six-time award winners.
Winners are determined by the association based on the information it gathers and data provided by third parties.

Edralin works in the paint department and serves as a store manager.
PT woman elected to UGN board
PORT TOWNSEND — Shelia Ramsey was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the United Good Neighbors, or UGN, board of directors.
Ramsey moved to Jefferson County in 2009 as an AmeriCorps service member, working at Head Start for one year and then as the volunteer coordinator for OlyCAP — Olympic Community Action Programs.
After completing her national service, Ramsey became the Jefferson County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, or RSVP, coordinator.
During her service as an AmeriCorps service member, she created and continues to host a local radio show on KPTZ, “Everybody Can,” which highlights volunteers and volunteer opportunities on the Olympic Peninsula.
As the volunteer coordinator for RSVP, Ramsey partners with the Jefferson County Community Network to manage Project Mentor, which supports young adults with disabilities through mentorship and work experience.
“I love living in Jefferson County,” Ramsey said. “It is not just the beauty, which is extraordinary, but the community that I most value. I feel very much at home in this inclusive, eclectic, and forward thinking community — and United Good Neighbors deeply reflects those values. I am excited to serve in this capacity.”

Massage fundraiser
PORT ANGELES — Local massage practitioners recently donated several hours of seated massage at the Port Angeles Food Bank and St. Andrew’s Place.
The charitable event was in honor of National Massage Awareness Week, an annual event offered by local therapists representing the Washington chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association.
The week is intended to educate the public about the benefits of professional massage therapy — an effective treatment method for sore, tight or strained muscles, tension headaches and rehabilitation from injury.
Massage therapists in Washington are licensed through the state Department of Health and recognized as health care practitioners.
Foam roller demos set at YMCA
PORT ANGELES — Mikki Reidel, health and well-being coordinator at the Olympic Peninsula YMCA, recently completed a certification in myofascial release, a technique often used by athletes and physical therapists to relieve pain and stretch muscles.
Foam rolling is a type of self-myofascial release that allows the user to not only stretch muscles and tendons but break down soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue.
By using their own body weight and a cylindrical foam roller, people can perform a self-massage, break up trigger points and soothe tight muscles.
Reidel will present an hourlong workshop at the YMCA, 302 S. Francis St., at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21.
She will demonstrate how to use the foam roller paired with yoga postures and basic stretching.
The workshop is free to YMCA members and $10 for nonmembers
For more information, phone Reidel at 360-452-9244 or email her at mikki@olympicpeninsula
