BRINNON — An Olympia-based environmental group is on record as opposing the rebuilding of Dosewallips River Road.
Olympic Forest Coalition and its Western Washington membership base have launched a letter-writing campaign to urge Olympic National Forest to turn the upper portion of the road into a walking trail.
The project was discussed at a meeting of the Quilcene/Brinnon Chamber of Commerce Wednesday morning.
The group was formed in 1989 as the Quilcene Ancient Forest Coalition, according its Web site, www.olympicforest.org.
A 300-foot section of the road leading to the Forest Service’s Elkhorn campground and Olympic National Park washed out during flooding on the Dosewallips River in January 2002.
Since then, access to campgrounds and Dosewallips Falls has been closed eight miles west of U.S. Highway 101.
