BRINNON — Jefferson County Natural Resources officials have completed a project that clears 75 acres of Dosewallips River flood plain, restoring it to its natural habitat.
The county, through a $295,920 state Salmon Recovery Fund Board grant, acquired the property about a mile upriver from Highway 101 near Brinnon.
The Salmon Recovery Fund grant was matched by a federal Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act of 2000 grant for $52,220, said Tami Pokorny, county natural resources specialist.
Pokorny helped supervise the project this week.
A state Department of Ecology grant of $48,768 was used to pay for the cleanup of the site, which will be seeded with native grass and planted with native shrubs now that the land has been cleared.
The contractor was Reeves Excavating and Land Clearing of Quilcene, which was awarded a contract of $29,741 for the work.
