BOTH THE SEQUIM and Port Angeles units of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula will be open free to students Monday, May 18, during the one-day walkouts planned by public school teachers in Clallam County.
The Sequim and Port Angeles teacher unions have voted to stop work for one day to protest the state Legislature’s inaction on funding public education.
On that day, the Boys & Girls Clubs units will be open free from 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. to all students, even those who are not members, according to the organization’s personnel.
“It is going to be open to anybody who wants to come in,” said Dave Miller, Sequim unit manager.
“There won’t be a fee. It will be a free day, kind of like a guest pass for kids who don’t have anywhere to go.”
Visitors will need to fill out some paperwork, he said, including providing emergency phone numbers for the younger students.
“We want to give the kids a place to go,” Miller said.
“We also want to support the teachers.
“It is important that these children have a place to go, and we are open regardless if they have a walkout or there is a day off.
“We are always open.”
